The Optomap is made possible by using a new technology – the Panoramic200™ Retinal Imaging System.  The Optomap enables us to see nearly all of your retina.  Furthermore, it eliminates the discomfort and inconvenience associated with pupil dilation.  As a result, you will not experience blurred vision or sensitivity to light following your eye exam.  It is important to note however, that should any abnormalities be detected or if we cannot obtain an acceptable image, dilation may be necessary.

A regular comprehensive eye exam is crucial to preserving your sight.  A comprehensive eye exam involves much more than a simple vision screening.  Even if you feel you are not having any problems with your vision, many ocular diseases have no symptoms and can only be detected through a thorough examination.  In fact, many health problems, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can be first detected in the eyes.

Spring Hill Eyecare, PLLC has various automated and computerized instruments to streamline the examination process.  Prior to the entering the examination room, you will go through a series of tests using the latest technology available.

The exam begins with a discussion of your medical and ocular history.  Many health disorders manifest other problems in the eyes that you may not be aware of.  Bring a list of the names and dosages of all medications (prescription and over-the-counter) you are taking.  Let the doctor know about any medicinal, seasonal, environmental, or food allergies you have.  Please make Dr. Szeliga aware of any visual problems or questions you have.  Be sure to mention any specific work, school, hobby, or sports-related visual demands.

The next step is determining your visual acuity both at distance and at near and with and without your current glasses or contact lenses, if applicable.  Many patients are able to memorize most eye charts by the end of an exam and can not accurately gauge if they are actually seeing the line clearly.  With our LCD monitor and computerized eye chart program this is no longer a problem as Dr. Szeliga can randomize the letters, numbers or pictures an infinite number of times.

A variety of other tests will be performed depending on the patient's age.  These tests may include testing your color vision, depth perception, central vision, peripheral vision, and binocular vision.  Dr. Szeliga will examine your refractive status to determine the best prescription for your glasses and/or contact lenses.  With the computerized eye chart, you can be sure that memorization is not influencing the outcome of your refraction.

Dr. Szeliga will prescribe and provide contact lenses customized to your individual needs.  Your needs may vary depending on the structure and ocular health of your eyes.  Also, the type of contact lenses prescribed may be based on your lifestyle demands.  Spring Hill Eyecare, PLLC offers trial contact lenses from many major contact lens companies.  We are not 'locked-in' to just one company.  Click on "Products" to learn more.

Contact lens wear involves greater risks and additional responsibilities on the part of the patient in order to obtain maximum benefits as compared to spectacles.  To ensure the safety and effectiveness of your contact lenses and to assess the health of your eyes while wearing contact lenses, progress checks and annual exams will be in your best interests and therefore required.  Dr. Szeliga will be able to advise you as to when and how many follow-up visits are necessary for the particular type of contact lens you are wearing.

Dr. Szeliga is also certified to fit Paragon CRT® lenses for Corneal Refractive Therapy - a technologically advanced, non-surgical process, which reshapes the cornea while you sleep.  You remove the lenses when you are awake and are able to go throughout the day without any other correction.  To learn more click here.

Dr. Szeliga will use a variety of instruments to determine the health of your ocular structures starting with the more anterior structures (lids, lashes, tear film, sclera, conjunctiva, cornea and iris) working towards the posterior structures (lens, vitreous, optic nerve and retina).  Dr. Szeliga will also measure the intraocular pressure of your eyes, one of the clues that aid in detecting glaucoma.

We are pleased to inform you that during your next visit to Spring Hill Eyecare, PLLC, you will experience the benefits of the latest technology in eye exams – the Optomap™ Retinal Exam.  The Optomap will produce the most comprehensive image of your retina, and allow us to perform a more thorough exam than was previously possible.  The result is that we can better prevent or reduce vision loss in our patients with a simple, quick and patient-friendly new exam.

Any routine eye exam should always include a careful look at the retina, which is located at the back of the eye, to screen for abnormalities or disease.  The sensitive tissue that makes up the retina is susceptible to a variety of diseases that can ultimately lead to partial loss of vision or even complete blindness.  Early detection of any retinal abnormality is thus crucial.  Previously, this screening was done by dilating the pupils, a procedure that many patients found uncomfortable, inconvenient and time-consuming.

The Optomap exam is simple: at the push of a button, we can generate a computer image of your retina for immediate review.  Experience with this technology has already led to improved disease detection and has possibly prevented vision loss and blindness in several patients.

We will be discussing this revolutionary exam with you further at your next appointment.  Here at Spring Hill Eyecare, PLLC, we are dedicated to offering our patients the best eye care possible, and acquiring the tools to help us do so.  We look forward to seeing you during your next visit – and providing the most comprehensive and advanced vision care available.
